THINGS TO DO

                        A2O

Alps 2 Ocean Trail is one of the ‘Great Rides’ of the Nga Haerenga, New Zealand Cycle Trail. At 300+km long, it’s an easy to intermediate walking and cycling trail, about 3 hours north of Queenstown.  The trail starts at Aoraki/Mt Cook Village in the heart of the Southern Alps and descends 700m down to Oamaru by the Pacific Ocean.

This trail potentially offers the most variety of any trail in New Zealand. You start the trail with a helicopter ride over the Tasman River to land in the middle of no-where, with the Southern Alps as your backdrop and things only get better. Where else will you see glaciers, snow capped mountains, hydro lakes, orchards, limestone formations, fossils, penguins and the ocean, all in one trail!

Waitaki Whitestone Geopark

The Waitaki Whitestone Geopark includes an abundance of unique geological and geomorphological features. Notable features include the Moeraki Boulders, karst limestone at Elephant Rocks, as well as “badlands” and faults at Clay Cliffs..

Penguin Experience Oamaru

The Oamaru Blue Penguin Colony provides visitors with an opportunity to see little penguins in their natural environment. In the evening, visitors are captivated by watching the nightly arrival of penguins from their days’ fishing at sea.

The Colony is a tourism operation with a strong research and conservation focus. At the core of the operation is a long-term conservation programme that ensures the penguins are protected and that the population achieves long-term stability. An important and unique part of that conservation programme is the Colony's Research Scientist who is now one of New Zealand’s leading little penguin experts. The programme is not limited to work at the site however, but extends further afield to include protection and monitoring of penguins elsewhere within the region.
